project 01
Project 01 studies the as-built form and materiality of a given precedent, the Norton House by Frank Gehry. Materiality is analyzed to create material transformations in the exisiting precedent as conditions of manipulation, misinterpretation, and redefinition.

Project 02 continues the study of L.A. School architects with a given shed precedent, “The Sawtooth” currently functioning as Eric Owen Moss’s firm in Culver City. A 30’ x 30’ corner of this shed is explored to design a classroom incorporating mixed materials from the site, the precedent, and Project 01.

Project 03 expands the exploration of the shed from Project 02 to design a “L.A. School” School, specifically a pre-school. The design focuses on a multi-part skylight system that carefully interacts with the existing source of clerestory light from the north. The sectional quality of the skylight system, which aligns with the existing structural system of trusses and beams, enables a patterned creation of shadow and light that ultimately determines the program of the school. As the sun moves throughout the day, students are intended to move, learn, and play in the designated areas of light. The contrast of brick material brought into the interior from the precedent and stucco establishes a contrast in light diffusion.
